Civic Events

The Chairman, Cllr Rhona Bratt, and Vice-chairman, Cllr Basil Smith will attend many events throughout the Civic Year. This page will have a diary of forthcoming events as well as reports and photographs of a number of those events.
Chairman's Charities
Guide Dog Puppy Rory with the Chairman

Each year the Chairman selects two or three charities to support, both financially and by promoting their work, in the local and wider community.

The local charity I intend to support is Holme Valley Mountain Rescue.

In addition I will continue my support for a national charity, Guide Dogs for the Blind. My husband Peter is a Guide Dog Puppy walker as well as being a public speaker for the charity. Peter and our latest puppy, Rory, will be accompanying me on some of my civic visits.

3rd July 2010 - Preview Evening at artWEEK

artWEEK
Fifty years ago a group of people decided to raise money to support the Macmillan Cancer Support charity. The Chairman of Holmfirth Urban District Council was a member of that group. Every year since then the Chairman of the Council has been invited to Chair the Annual Meeting of the fundraising group and attend some of its fundraising activities. Over the years the group has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for the charity. It was an honour to be invited to the preview of artWEEK.

Bob Riley, treasurer of the fundraising group with Cllr Rhona Bratt and Rory, the guide dog puppy, who came along to his first evening civic engagement.
30th June 2010 - Holmfirth Community Forum

This meeting was attended by a wide variety of community organisations, working to bring together the services provided for families and young people within the area. Of particular focus are issues related to helping parents develop their parenting skills, improving access to services and dealing with alcohol problems, particularly in younger age people. A conference is planned for the new year to develop these ideas further. Three members of the Parish Council attended this event, Cllr Judith Roberts, Cllr Beryl Smith (in her role of kirklees councillor) and Cllr Rhona Bratt.
19th June 2010 - New Mill Gala

Honley Show
It is the tradition of the New Mill Gala committee to invite the Chairman of the Parish Council to open the Gala and to judge the Fancy dress competition. There was another special guest at the Gala, Mrs Betty Clark, who this year celebrated her 90th Birthday.

Mrs Clark is seen here with Cllr Rhona Bratt and Rory, the guide dog puppy, who came along to his first civic engagement.

13th June 2010 - Kirklees Mayor's Civic Service

Unfortunately the Parish Council received very late notice of this event and the Chairman was not able to attend. Fortunately the Vice -Chairman, Cllr Basil Smith was able to attend to represent the Council and the Parish Council are grateful to him for stepping in at such short notice. Cllr Basil Smith was accompanied by his wife, Mrs Beryl Smith
10th June 2010 - Funeral of former Councillor Bill Oldham

Some of the duties of the Chairman and Councillors are sad occasions. Today was the funeral of former Parish Councillor, Bill Oldham, who represented Honley for many years. Councillors, past and present, joined with family and friends to commemorate the life of Bill and the work he did for the community of Honley and the Holme Valley.
26 May 2010 - Kirklees Mayoral Dinner

Mayoral Dinner
Chairman, Cllr Rhona Bratt, and guest, Mrs Rene Quigley attend Kirklees Mayoral Dinner at Huddersfield Town Hall.
17 May 2010 - Installation of Chairman at the Annual Meeting of the Parish Council

In the past 5 years in my time on the Parish Council, each newly elected chairman has expressed thanks for the honour of being appointed but has also wondered what they are letting themselves in for. Now I know how they feel - glad to have the opportunity to serve the community whilst wondering how I can fit everything in!.

Judith Roberts set a high standard of community engagement in her environmental project with schools and community groups in the Valley. I plan to continue this work with schools and other groups but around the theme of citizenship and democracy to support and encourage the engagement of young people in the community.

Last year the Parish Council received reaccreditation in the Quality Council Scheme and as part of that we will be looking at the development of the council, its councillors and officers, and in the projects it takes forward. I hope in the next year to take an active role in this work and to keep you informed of our progress.
